For my masters degree my goal was to explore augmented reality typography and see how far complex 3D text animation can go in AR.
AR is expected to become an important way to access digital spaces in the future. For designers, that means new possibilities, but also new technical limits. Even though AR filters are everywhere now, it is still hard to bring truly complex 3D type animations to mobile. The main reason is performance, animated 3D assets get heavy quickly, and phones have strict file size and format limits. So I developed a workflow that makes kinetic 3D type possible as a mobile AR filter by reducing the complexity without losing the look and movement.
Alongside the technical aspects, I designed a concept for six AR filters built around animated 3D typography. Each phrase is meant to spark curiosity and make people feel more open towards new technology. The animation and the words are closely connected, so the message feels more direct and alive.
Users can also interact with the filters and reshape the surface. They can bring their hands, other people, or objects into the front camera and become part of the effect. The reflective material is a visual metaphor for the blend of digital and physical worlds. I chose extremely wide and compressed type styles to give each filter a strong character, and adjusted the weight to fit the animation.
Each filter also exists as a digital 2D poster. This way, the work could be shown on screens in the graduation exhibition, even for visitors who did not use AR on their phones.
