The riso zine design for Sarah DaVanzo, L'Oréal, explores themes of alchemy and curiosity. Sarah, a trendspotter and futurist working with the world’s leading brands and advertising agencies, envisioned a printed zine that captures the essence of insight and transformation. During the pandemic, she developed the idea for Insight Alchemy—a creative response to the digital overload and sensory deprivation of quarantine life.
I collaborated with Sarah to bring this vision to life. The riso zine design was produced with the support of Lucky Risograph NYC, whose expertise helped refine the printing process. Designed for Sarah’s speeches and internal company workshops, the layout draws inspiration from 19th-century medical encyclopedias, blending historic aesthetics with a contemporary narrative.
Sarah describes the project as a personal exploration of curiosity and creativity in a time of isolation:
"Insight Alchemy was born from the mind-numbing, screen-intermediated, sensory deprivation of self-quarantined life during the blurry Covid months. Like many, my algorithm bubble got smaller while my echo chamber got bigger. Working, playing, and doing everything at home, I started to feel curiosity challenged. Sensing existential risk, I pursued a challenging art project that was out of my depth […]." — Sarah DaVanzo, author
This riso zine design merges art direction, illustrative compositing, and editorial design to create a visually compelling print piece. The combination of tactile risograph printing and thought-provoking storytelling turns Insight Alchemy into a unique artifact for creative exploration.
