Together with Lars Harmsen of Slanted Publishers I designed this photobook about Monopoli, Italy.
The book looks at the old fishing town in southern Italy and captures everyday life, traditions, and local culture in a quiet and observant way.
Photographer Stefan Braun has been returning to Monopoli in Puglia for over twenty five years. Over time, he has built a close relationship with the place and its people. His photographs show narrow streets, the busy fishing port, and small moments from daily life, from cooking and working to waiting and watching. The images feel unhurried and grounded in the rhythm of the town.
What makes his work special is how naturally the photographs tell a story. They do not explain or comment, but instead allow atmosphere and detail to speak for themselves. Each image adds to a larger portrait of Monopoli without the need for words.Alongside the photography, the book also includes regional recipes and references to local traditions. These elements add another layer and connect the images to everyday life. Together, they form a personal and respectful portrait of a town shaped by the sea, its history, and the people who live there.
The book is available at Slanted Publishers.
